Bill, great write up as always.
It seems from the last two days that Farabee is ahead of Morgan and Ratcliffe. What do you think his chances are of making the big team opening night? As things stand now, realizing there's a long preseason, is it between him and the Germ?

Not Bill (no one is!) but I'm hoping JF makes it but also have hopes of Rubtsov filling in for Patrick He's a perfect option even if he doesnt put up points at first (and he CAN) he looks so good on the D end of things, If he can keep up with the pace he won't hurt the team.

People... stop with the young guys making the team. Not happening. None of them are ready. Let them develop in ahl. Pitlick or vorby will be there. Ruby looks the closest for a call up later in season.

enjoy the coach putting them up against the top dogs. Sends a great message to me. If those kids have their head on straight shows how far they need to go.

This camp is a breath of fresh air compared to the last few years

Even if the kids dont make the team at least they're being given a fair shake and being put with the big guys and not scrubs

Hey look another moron franchise handing out a short term deal at great value.

Charlie McAvoy has agreed to terms with BOS. Three-year deal, $4.9M AAV. Very similar to Zach Werenski’s three-year, $5M AAV deal with CBJ. McAvoy could make up the $300K difference because his Year 3 salary, and Qualifying Offer base, is $7.3M, $300K more than Werenski’s.

First, let me say that I like you and I think guys around here are way too harsh you. I don’t think you’re always right but you at least offer a different perspective.

Now, I don’t dislike the Provorov deal at all. It’s a slight overpayment right now but could be a bargain when he’s 26 to 28.

With this said, I think 90% of the fans in here react with a Philadelphia pride. Guys only suck after years of disappointment or after they’ve left on bad terms. I think most in here could benefit from an outsider’s prospective but most choose to not hear them.

Pitlick is injured, Patrick is injured and TK could miss time. That’s a lot of opportunity for young guys. Not sure why people shouldn’t get excited about a young player this time of year with the situation at hand.

My point is if Provorov was given the same or similar deals to Werenski and now Mcavoy, what would he have done that would have driven his AAV over 6.75 on his next contract? If he is great the next 3 years, then you give him the money.

Sorry I'm not giving him the contract he just got coming off last season.

Nothing wrong with a nine game look see. Buys time.

Do I believe people have gotten ahead of themselves since the rookie game? 100%, yes! Do I think Farabee made the most of his first opportunity to get a look at, also yes, but it’s still a rookie game.

On the flip side, I think this is an important camp for German Rubtsov who can absolutely push for a spot. If Rubtsov makes the team, Laughton could move up.

is that a good thing for this team to have success though?

Because CBJ an BB are not assuming a lot of risk. They are paying for RFA years with either the assumption that they will pay market value for their UFA years or that they will let them walk. Sure, provy got more, but on the basis that he will be a cornerstone of this team until at least 2025. It's risk mitigation: pay him like a top 4 D-man and if last year is somehow the true reflection of his talent, you overpaid by 2.75 million TOPS. If his level of play returns or improves, it becomes a steal.

Interesting comparison to j will. I remember Keith Jones saying he knew it was time to retire after he showed up to camp buzzing around. The good old jitter bug reference coatsey liked so much. I see him as a Elias type. Sound defensive play with offense. Not overly phisycal but doesn’t shy with a strong stick and doesn’t take a lot of penalties.

If those three are out. I see andwroff and possible two younger guys stepping up at first. Would be worse if they were all top 6. But it seems like the norm to me.

I’d take either! Unless of course you mean being traded too soon for a short term gap.

Over-pay for two years, market value for two years, under-pay for two years is the hope for Provy’s contract imo.

Ding. Ding. Ding.

Also, it allows for the team to evaluate him at 27. If he is everything you hoped for in a top-D player, pay him then. There's much more uncertainty with going into negotiations for a player who is about to hit UFA at 24-25 who just made 7 million on their last year and will be likely asking for a 7 year deal.

In a cap environment, you have to use all the tools and make some deals like this. There is risk for sure and you have to make the right evaluation of the player but if you make the right call it can really help you down the line.

Apparently 3 years and 1 year from UFA status should command the same value as 6 years including 2 UFA years.
